Overview

Dr. Motao (Matt) Zhu at The Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP), located in Abigail Wexner Research Institute of Nationwide Children's Hospital, is seeking a research aid. CIRP is one of nine Injury Control Research Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Responsibilities
    Provide direct support to a National Institute of Health funded study on cell phone use while driving (R01: Randomized trial on mobile technology to reduce young drivers' cellphone use)
  1. Provide direct support to various research projects in transportation safety or drug use disorders
  2. Assists with research experiments for specific area.
  3. You will be responsible for:
    • Recruiting study participants
    • Administering questionnaires and interviews.
    • Managing study timelines and ensuring IRB compliance
  4. Conducts laboratory analyses; assists in assay studies and tests on substrates of materials used in research.
  5. Performs cell bacterial and viral cultures utilizing sterile techniques.
  6. Grows and harvests research specimens, as applicable
  7. Might require some local travel for study related activities
  8. Obtains supplies and equipment needed for research projects and ensures equipment is in proper working condition. Draws items from inventory supplies.
  9. Prepares special instruments and monitoring devices used to record test results.
  10. Maintains laboratory records and completes required charts. Records patient information in log books. Files charts and patient slides and ensures appropriate disbursement of reports.
  11. Assists with preparation of laboratory reports by collecting and collating research data. Prepares drafts of laboratory reports under direction of Research Assistant and conducts library research to obtain supporting research data. Prepares charts, graphs, and related data.
  12. Maintains clean laboratory area. Replaces instruments after use and ensures slides, test tubes, glassware, and other items used in analyses are cleaned. Adheres to proper safety techniques and procedures.
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Undergraduate student with a major in public health or related field
  • Experience in participant recruitment is preferred but not required
  • Be able to start in summer 2024
  • 20 hours per week; flexible schedule to accommodate classes

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Percent of time spent on:

  • 50% Typing on computer
  • 25% Answering phones
  • 11% Miscellaneous paperwork associated with research and OSU faculty appointment
  • 10% Acting as liaison
  • 02% Xeroxing
  • 02% Filing

Minimum physical requirements:

  • 100% Kneeling / reaching
  • 100% Finger dexterity
  • 100% Talking / hearing / seeing
  • 33% Lifting / carrying weight 0-20 pounds for 1-5 minutes
  • 33% Pushing a cart with weight 50-100 pounds for 5-10 minutes
