Job Description

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opening for a Shift Manager Laboratory at our Middletown Works facility. The Shift Manager Laboratory will be responsible for supervising the activities of the employees within the Metallurgical and related labs. They will also be responsible for all activities related to the collection, preparation, and testing of samples from the production units, outside processors, other Cleveland-Cliffs operations.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Supervise other labs and other areas when needed.

  • Monitor activities related to safety and environmental programs.

  • Coordinate weekly work schedules to efficiently achieve departmental KPIs.

  • Work with Employees, Lab specialists, Maintenance, Production Units, and Metallurgists to identify and solve problems with testing, sample pickup, or sample test results.

  • Review quality records created by lab employees for accuracy and completeness.

  • Review all current standard operating instructions and temporary work instructions.

  • Report metrics to leadership on employee performance, lab efficiencies, maintenance and equipment status, and department expenditures such as labor and training.

  • Validate testing accuracy by enforcing and reviewing all standard operating procedures/temporary work instructions.

  • Coordinate and track the processing of rush material and timely testing of production Q-Coils.

  • Maintain inventory, investigate holds and non-dispositioned coils, and provide containment of non-conforming material.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • 1-2 years of experience within a supervisory or leadership role.

  • Strong ability to effectively manage direct employees in multiple areas.

  • Ability to evaluate problems, correctly focus the resources and make efficient decisions.

  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess knowledge and experience of the operation of the lab, lab equipment, lab management systems, and/or relevant experience.

  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience with a unionized workforce.
