DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

This position will report to the Senior Manager (Counsel). The Privacy Intern will be a part of Sony's Global Privacy Section, led by the Global Head of Privacy. The Global Privacy Section is responsible for establishing and maintaining an enterprise vision, strategy and program to secure Sony's information assets, services, and the products that depend on them, thus, building trust with customers and stakeholders, and protecting the privacy of Sony's customers and employees.

POSITION SUMMARY

Sony's Global Privacy Section is seeking a highly motivated law student (current 2L) with a passion for privacy to support the global team across a range of complex privacy projects. The selected intern will work with subject matter experts on Sony's global privacy team on a variety of projects, such as U.S. state privacy law development, global privacy-enhancing technology implementation, and data-driven digital transformation initiatives. The selected intern will also support the Privacy Section to prepare for its annual forum for Sony's global privacy community.

The internship presents a unique opportunity to work within one of Sony's central functions, as well as to liaise with privacy, legal and business stakeholders across Sony's diverse range of music, entertainment and electronics companies around the world.

This is a hybrid role requiring 2-3 days per week onsite at Sony's New York City office.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Privacy Section with a range of central projects benefitting the privacy, legal and business stakeholder community within the Sony group companies. Such projects may include global privacy technology implementation, U.S. state privacy law development, and digital marketing and advertising technology.

  • Assist with the Privacy Section's annual global privacy forum in June by preparing presentation materials, supporting virtual attendees and handling administrative tasks.

  • Support the preparation and review of legal, regulatory and industry updates, guidance and legal memoranda for the wider Sony privacy community.

  • Research, analyze and summarize various technical privacy requirements and developments, such as state-specific requirements, tracking technologies and universal opt-out mechanisms.

  • Research, analyze and document the privacy regulatory landscape in certain geographies. Draft memoranda, deliverables and meeting materials. Present findings to the wider Sony privacy community as requested.

  • Research and keep up-to-date on developments in U.S. state privacy law. Update and maintain tracker of comprehensive and sectoral laws.

  • Update and maintain recordkeeping for internal cross-group initiatives.

  • Review and update draft policies, processes and templates.

  • Facilitate the Privacy Section's organization, finalization and distribution of key global privacy resources via its intranet site.

  • Support project leads with drafting key presentation materials and managing, coordinating and tracking project activities and deliverables. Attend key project-related and team meetings and workshops. Assist in the preparation of meeting summaries and follow-up actions.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION

  • Enrolled in a J.D. program (current 2L).

  • Demonstrable interest in privacy law through courses, trainings, certifications, seminars or previous work experience.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint and Excel.

  • Applicants should include a cover letter and a legal writing sample, such as a legal journal submission, a memorandum or an internal or client-facing document.

The target hourly rate for this internship is $23.00 per hour. The individual will be paid hourly and is eligible for overtime.
