Luna is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II in our Blacksburg, VA office.

About the Role:

Luna's product engineering team in Blacksburg is looking for an entry level mechanical engineer to help in designing new sensors, instrument enclosures, and test fixtures to support our range of products. Using tools like SolidWorks and along with a team of other engineers, you would work to design, prototype, and test new sensor designs and instrument enclosures. We make use of fabrication methods that run the gamut from bent sheet metal through high volume custom injection molding and robotic assembly. As a mechanical engineer at Luna, you will gain exposure to the process by which a wide range of products are developed, tested, and released into production.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a team to design new fiberoptic sensors for use in demanding environments
  • Design fixtures and processes for testing optical sensors and sensing instruments
  • Design enclosures for electro-optical systems (desktop, rackmount, and hand-held)
  • Help guide changes to existing and new designs to improve manufacturability
  • Create procedures for the construction and testing of complex electromechanical products

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or similar
  • 2-5 years of mechanical engineering experience
  • Excellent communication, technical writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Function well in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Experience with solid modeling CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with laboratory test equipment (strain gages, thermocouples, etc.)
  • Experience with fiberoptics
  • Experience with standardized testing (IP rating, MIL-STD-810G, etc.)
