Overview

The Simulation Technician assists with the implementation of the full spectrum of simulation methodologies utilized in the Sentara Center for Simulation and Immersive Learning (SCSIL, or The Center) with an emphasis on device-based simulation. This person is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing computerized manikins, task trainers, and related multimedia peripherals; analyzing and resolving user and interface problems; assisting in the training and education of non-technical users with proper use of simulators and associated software; organizing and maintaining appropriate supply and equipment inventory to support Center activities; and advising the Director of Simulation Technology and other Center Directors concerning procurement of hardware, software, and audio/visual equipment involving device-based simulation methodologies.

Responsibilities

This individual will work with Center personnel and faculty to implement simulation-based educational and assessment activities at the Center; will be responsible for programing, operating, maintaining, and repairing of all simulation equipment; will be responsible for the setup, organization, breakdown, and cleanup of the simulation environment, supplies, and equipment; will participate in staff and client training; will recommend new simulation technology as needs arise; will respond to direction from the Sim Tech Manager and Sim Tech Director; and, will assist in general needs of the Center when available.

KEY FUNCTIONS & EXPECTED PERFORMANCE

    Education and research support
    1. Support faculty and other staff in designing and delivering actual, virtual, and/or web-based training/learning encounters.
    2. Design and create low-fidelity simulation models for use in training events.
    3. Support research and administrative activities
    4. Support device testing.

  1. Healthcare simulation training and operations
    1. Participate in and perform the setup, operation, troubleshooting, and breakdown of healthcare simulation activities and equipment/technologies as well as associated audio-visual equipment.
    2. Provide technical support and training for the operation and maintenance of simulators, task trainers, and associated peripherals.
    3. Conduct routine maintenance of equipment and simulators, based on Center and vendor guidelines and recommendations. Interface with vendors and subject matter experts when necessary.
    4. Maintain current knowledge of existing equipment. When needed, create standard operating procedures and/or simulator/simulation/equipment operation manuals, to ensure standardized use by all Center users.
    5. Participate in meetings to support planning and preparation for Center events, ensure Sim Center calendar is accurate and up-to-date, and anticipate schedules for event set-up, execution, and breakdown.
    6. Ensure timely transitions between simulation events.
    7. Organize and maintain healthcare simulation equipment; and manage the simulator, simulation, reusable, and consumable supply inventory.

  1. Other duties
    1. Participate in scheduling, logistical, and execution support for all programs held at EVMS.
    2. Perform other diverse duties as required to support ongoing education and training sessions, develop simulation or educational technologies, and participate in research activities.
    3. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

High School degree and five (5) years related experience. Related experience relevant for this position includes healthcare, information technology, media production, mechanics, and engineering. Bachelor Degree and experience with simulation is preferred but not required.

This staff member needs to be detail-oriented, flexible, self-motivated, and self-directed; able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; be a team player with good problem solving skills; and have willingness and aptitude to learn new technologies. This individual also needs to be familiar working with basic computer hardware and software; familiar with audiovisual technology, and, proficient in Windows operating systems, wired and wireless network connectivity, and database creation and use.
