Job Description
Inductive Pavement Engineering Leader

Inductive Pavement Engineering Leader (152306)

About Us

At HDR, we specialize in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. While we are most well-known for adding beauty and structure to communities through high-performance buildings and smart infrastructure, we provide much more than that. We create an unshakable foundation for progress because our multidisciplinary teams also include scientists, economists, builders, analysts and artists. That's why we believe diversity is our greatest strength. HDR is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and an affirmative action employer.

We believe that the way we work can add meaning and value to the world. That ideas inspire positive change. That coloring outside the lines can illuminate fresh perspectives. And that small details yield important realizations. Above all, we believe that collaboration is the best way forward.

Primary Responsibilities

HDR has partnered with clients to shape communities and push the boundaries of what's possible since 1917. We specialize in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. With nearly 10,000 employees in more than 225 locations around the world, we think global and act local.
HDR is a leader in the use and adoption of transportation technologies to improve mobility and reduce congestion. We are expanding our team to include a focus on new approaches to transportation that integrate energy, vehicles, communications, and highway infrastructures into a more flexible, efficient, and convenient network of electric roads and vehicles. We are committed to being pioneers and advancing the state-of-the-art in technologies on behalf of our clients using our core expertise in highway, pavement and bridge design to accompany new advances in technologies such as inductive electric vehicle charging systems. We are seeking a self-starting individual who is an expert in how electrification of the vehicle fleet can be incorporated into the design of future highways and pavements. Importantly, while knowledge of wireless electric vehicle charging using Inductive Power Transfer, magnetic resonance, and associated technologies is important, so too is an understanding of how these technologies need to be integrated into the highway and pavement network. While exceptional candidates with a background in wired or static electric vehicle charging systems will be considered, we are specifically seeking expertise and understanding of how dynamic inductive charging systems can be embedded in pavements. A background in the application of electrification of roadway surfaces for vehicle charging is critical.
As a leader on this new team, you would be in an environment where there is the introduction of new technologies, requiring driving to closure of high levels of undefined/unknown customer/marketing requirements and implementation approaches. You will: assess competing solutions and make appropriate choices and recommendations supporting new technology development initiatives and other critical projects. Provide technical guidance to more junior engineers, and lead development activities. Develop, maintain, and track design documents/requirements/specifications for in-house products. Follow and improve development processes/procedures, and provide input to Sr. Management regarding technology trends/directions.
Keywords: Highway, Roadway and Pavement Design, Inductive Pavement Engineering Leader; #152306; dynamic wireless power transfer; static wireless charging; electrified roads, smart streets; connected vehicles; autonomous vehicles; Electrical Engineer

This position requires the following skills, attributes and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering or related field required, focus in Power Engineering preferred. MS EE a plus.

  • A background in induction furnaces, resonant power converters or other high-power power conversion electronics
  • Demonstrated ability to take designs from concept through to mass production
  • Minimum 10 years in a technical project leadership role developing new technology and new products, interacting with other engineering specialties (civil, structural, materials).
  • Must have the ability to mentor and lead more junior engineers
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with client managers, technical directors, business group directors and operations staff.

Desirable skills/experience:
  • Background in design of highways and bridges, with a focus on the incorporation of charging systems in pavements preferred.
