Description

Smithfield Hog Production is offering a swine research internship program for students interested in applied swine research and production. The objective of this program is to conduct commercial animal health research in sow, nursery, and wean to finish facilities. The successful candidate will be an integral part of research data collection on farm and work in a team environment.


Applicants encouraged to have: animal handling experience, independent problem solving skills, organizational skills, and experience with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities:
* Works daily on research farm; including weighing and moving pigs from piglet age to market age.
* Works at other Smithfield Hog Production locations; including feed mill operations, packing plant, quality assurance laboratories, and veterinary medicine laboratory.
* Implements and follows all protocols for each research trial; including recording all necessary data
* Performs and masters all methods of data collection; including operating pen and individual scales
* Upkeep of research equipment and facilities; including computerized feed systems
* Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production subscribes.
* Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor.
* Read and understand the company's emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site.
* Work weekends as scheduled.
* Follow all company animal care, IPS, and biosecurity policies.
* Performs all duties as defined by supervisor

Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license anddependable transportation
    * Ability to use Microsoft Office; Excel and Access.
    * Ability to communicate verbally in English.
    * Excellent communication and organization skills.
    * Ability to lift up to 50lbs.

Junior or Senior preferred,must be pursuing an agriculture-related degree, willingness to work longhours, including weekends, works well with others, able to work outside, some manuallabor required, one professional or academic reference required.
