About Us
At HDR, we specialize in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. While we are most well-known for adding beauty and structure to communities through high-performance buildings and smart infrastructure, we provide much more than that. We create an unshakable foundation for progress because our multidisciplinary teams also include scientists, economists, builders, analysts and artists. That's why we believe diversity is our greatest strength. HDR is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and an affirmative action employer.
We believe that the way we work can add meaning and value to the world. That ideas inspire positive change. That coloring outside the lines can illuminate fresh perspectives. And that small details yield important realizations. Above all, we believe that collaboration is the best way forward.
Primary Responsibilities
The Trenchless Engineer will report to the Trenchless Engineering Manager, having primary responsibilities revolving around the planning, managing and orchestrating initiatives associated with trenchless technologies: engineering, design and construction applications.
The Trenchless Engineer will contribute to the Trenchless Program by: utilizing experience and expertise to support engineering and design practices, including (1) hydraulic fracture and inadvertent returns analyses; (2) front end information collection initiatives such as geotechnical investigation programs for incorporation into critical engineering and design decisions and constructability evaluations; (3) feasibility of trenchless design and construction; and (4) recommendations for mitigation as needed throughout the lifecycle of trenchless projects (planning through construction). Data management, quality control of design and construction data, planning and risk management for supporting all trenchless initiatives are also included in the primary responsibilities.
Field based responsibilities will primarily include site reconnaissance, support to geotechnical field investigations and oversight of trenchless pipeline installations. While in the field, the Trenchless Engineer will monitor and report on daily activities and present field data in a timely manner with a high level of quality. Also included as part of field based responsibilities is on site support for the Trenchless Construction Manager and trenchless construction operations.
Specific details regarding Trenchless Engineer responsibilities include the following:
-
Perform desk top route selection and evaluate feasibility for design and construction of trenchless crossings
-
Carry out site reconnaissance visits
-
Develop a subsurface investigation program for determination of feasibility of construction for various trenchless installation methods
-
Evaluate surface and subsurface conditions based on collected data and information to determine feasibility of trenchless construction and preferred construction techniques
-
Communicate regularly with clients regarding project status and technical discussions related to trenchless construction applications
-
Estimate quantities of materials used and disposed of for trenchless pipeline installations
-
Estimate installation loading and stress for trenchless pipeline installations
-

-
Perform calculations to determine carrier pipe and coating specifications
-
Define workspace requirements for applicable construction equipment at trenchless crossing locations
-
Prepare and review pertinent project documentation including: project design/construction specifications, bid packages, drawings, design reports, engineering assessments and data sets
-
Learn/Improve the knowledge and use of the available software models for trenchless pipeline design
-
Interface with project team and other Company functions throughout project execution
-
Ensure that documents, calculations and reports are developed in compliance with the governing project legislation and standardization
-
Prepare field engineering and as-built documents
-
Concur in the definition/updating of department standards and procedures as well as ensure adequate feedback/lessons learned from projects
-
Perform construction oversight, monitoring and reporting on daily construction activities, identifying problematic conditions and providing recommendations
