Overview: Competitive Intelligence
Competitive intelligence guides informed decisions and strategies by synthesizing actionable insights drawn from analysis of broad sources of market, competitor, and internal expertise. CI leverages multiple data sources to provide reliable intelligence to key decision-makers at BioMarin. CI works cross-functionally to serve as a strategic thought partner for stakeholders.

Summary Description: Our internship program is designed to actively engage students in applying their talents and academic experience in areas of specific professional interest at BioMarin. Our summer interns not only gain hands-on, relevant industry experience, but are also given opportunities to acclimate to the corporate setting through a series of learning workshops, which are designed to prepare them for entering the workforce. The program will begin in June and end in August.

All interns must be currently enrolled in a graduate program working towards a degree (certificate programs do not qualify) with plans to enroll in school the following semester.
The position will involve working directly with Associate Directors and Sr. Director in Competitive Intelligence to support better understanding of the competitive landscape and implications for BioMarin.

Skills the intern will gain:

  • Knowledge of how science, business and technology is utilized in a biotechnology organization
  • Knowledge in drug development and competitive intelligence principles
  • Critical analysis and distillation of competitor datasets
  • Experience in a matrix organization


Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Update Gene Therapy competitive landscape assessments by leveraging internal and external sources of information to inform portfolio strategy:
    • Conduct primary and secondary research to inform CI assessment
    • Work semi-independently and perform check-ins with Sr. Director to receive feedback and improve directionality of research and synthesis of information
    • Create/update an Excel database and Powerpoint presentation summarizing key findings of research
  • Assist BioMarin team with coverage of competitor activities (possibly at a key medical conference):
    • Play a key role in conference planning including identifying high priority presentations, gaining familiarity with market, and working with stakeholders to obtain alignment prior to conference
    • Attend conference with BioMarin team helping to cover key talks, posters, and exhibition booths
    • Help develop final report summarizing key learnings of the conference and present to leadership team

Education:

  • Must be enrolled in an advanced degree program such as a PhD or Masters in the biological sciences or business administration. Also open to business school students with an undergraduate major in a biological sciences.

Required Skills:

  • Understanding of molecular and cellular biology
  • Able to collect and synthesize a wide range of scientific and clinical information
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to communicate details concisely
  • Excels at working collaborative with others
  • Innovative thinking and analysis
  • Embraces constructive feedback to improve upon their ideas

Preferred Skills:

  • Healthcare consulting experience, either through a consulting firm or an on-campus student group
  • Understanding of different gene therapy or gene editing technologies
  • Understanding of clinical development
