About the Job

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth invites applications for two full-time Instructors (job code 9404) or Assistant Professors (job code 9403) for the 2024-2025 academic year. This is a limited, non-tenure track appointment for one year, although with possible extensions as needed by the department. Although other areas may be considered, the preferred areas of teaching are in materials science and testing, system dynamics and controls, kinematics and mechatronics, automation and/or systems integration. Job Duties
The successful candidate is expected to teach in both lecture and laboratory sections at the undergraduate level. A full-time instructional load is up to 4 lecture and laboratory sections per semester (Fall 2024 and Spring 2025). We reserve the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • MS degree for the Instructor position;
  • PhD degree for the Assistant Professor position;
  • Degrees should be in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a closely related field and earned by the start of the appointment from a regionally accredited university; and
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate authorization to work in the United States at the University of Minnesota Duluth by the start date.


Preferred Qualifications (at either rank)

  • Previous experience with teaching engineering courses in the subjects listed above at the college/university level, including labs;
  • Professional work experience in a non-academic engineering position;
  • Experience demonstrating the ability to support the University's commitment to equity and diversity;
  • Ability to contribute across multiple degree programs;
  • Licensed professional engineer; and
  • Demonstrated excellence in effective written and oral communication skills.
About the Department

The MIE Department is part of the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at UMD and is fully accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC-ABET) and offers Bachelor of Science degrees in both Industrial Engineering (BSIE) and Mechanical Engineering (BSME). The department also offers graduate degrees in the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) and the Master of Environmental Health and Safety (MEHS). Our students are talented and engaged, both inside and outside of the classroom, and have an impressive track record in regional and national design competitions such as the United States Air Force Research Laboratories design challenge, the SAE Clean Snowmobile challenge, and high-powered rocketry competitions (e.g., the Spaceport America Cup).

SCSE is the largest college at UMD comprising approximately 3200 undergraduate students, 240 graduate students, 180 faculty, and 80 permanent staff. The college includes the science departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics and Astronomy, and Mathematics and Statistics, as well as the ABET-accredited departments of Computer Science, Electrical, Chemical, Civil and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
