A true original

Since 1899, the predecessor to Motorists Commercial Mutual Insurance Company has been providing quality insurance to hardworking individuals and the successful companies they've built. It all started when a small group of Minnesota hardware dealers met in Minneapolis to organize a mutual insurance company to protect themselves and their businesses from fire losses. The guiding principle for this founding group was simple and clear –– to provide sound insurance protection at the lowest cost consistent with safety.

In January of 1900, the new company began doing business as The Retail Hardware Dealers Mutual Fire Insurance Company when a Certificate Of Authority was issued by the Minnesota Insurance Department.

Because it was the first company of its kind, it is known and identified as the "Original Hardware Mutual." In the beginning, insurance was available only to hardware dealers, and only stock and merchandise were covered. Later, the buildings and homes of hardware dealers were also covered. Eventually, other lines of coverage were added, and products and services were extended to other states and to other classes of business and property owners.

Pioneer grows to meet more needs
Through the years the company name was changed several times as the company evolved, eventually becoming Motorists Commercial Mutual Insurance Company.

Several years later on April 15, 1993, the predecessor to Motorists Commercial Mutual entered into an affiliation agreement with Motorists Mutual Insurance Company of Columbus, Ohio, and the predecessor company redomiciled from Minnesota to Ohio, effective May 26, 1993. This change strengthened both the predecessor to Motorists Commercial Mutual and Motorists Mutual, and it has resulted in more new and innovative products and services than ever before. Motorists Commercial Mutual Insurance Company and MCM Insurance Agency are now members of The Motorists Insurance Group.

Our Vision
The idea born in 1899 of "providing sound insurance protection at the lowest cost consistent with safety" is as important to Motorists Commercial Mutual today as it was then.
